FRIDAY MARCH 20 5:17 am…. This is the way we like to see spring begin: a winter storm watch has been issued by the National Weather Service for Saturday night and Sunday.

A powerful low pressure system is spinning around a trough in the Gulf of Alaska and should begin to make its presence felt in California by Saturday morning, with rain and snow falling the Sierra by late Saturday afternoon. Snow levels should start out at around 6500 feet but will drop rapidly overnight to below 3000 feet.

The storm has the potential to tap into about one inch of precipitable water, which should translate to at least a foot of new snow where conditions are ideal above 7000 feet. The systemâ€s best energy is moving south â€" the nose of the jet streak thatâ€s carrying this storm is currently aimed squarely at Mono County. So Mammoth could see as much as two feet of snow if the system holds together and hits its target.

Snowfall rates should peak in the early morning hours on Sunday, with about a six-hour period of very heavy snowfall. By Sunday afternoon the storm should be breaking up, with snow showers lingering into the night and perhaps Monday.
