Australian ski and snowboard resorts has unleashed an effort to fight a new proposal from the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) that would require chains or snow tires on all four-wheel drive (4WD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles on certain winter roads beginning in 2010.

Ski resort officials counter that compulsory use of chains or snow tires for AWD and 4WD vehicles is a valid strategy, but due to cost and inconvenience is one that should be used as a last resort. Alternative strategies proposed by the ski resorts include enhanced sanding efforts, variable speed limits, construction of snow fencing to minimize drifts, variable speed limits, electronic information signs, improved chain design requirements, expanded chain availability, a driver education effort and expanded chain-up areas.

The RTA reportedly is requiring alternative proposals to be submitted by March 1, 2009.

Ridiculous!
