Sure, most of the snow is gone. It's been unseasonably warmed. But hey, this *is* the Midwest...it might snow three feet tomorrow. Or in June. You just never know. So don't give up on the season.
I'm hearing it a lot: "Winter is over." That's not true, or at least I'm doing a good job convincing myself otherwise. Yeah, it's looking desolate out there...especially around the Minneapolis/St Paul and metro areas. But hey, this is the Midwest. You know, the same place that got three feet of snow in ONE DAY on HALLOWEEN. Or how about the three feet that dumped in Michigan's Upper Penninsula two years ago...IN APRIL? Our season isn't over. Not by a damn sight.
Here's a few things to put Midwesterner's mind at ease. First, I've got (up to $10) riding on another good snow dump. I agreed with a friend that we'd get SOME new snow, but nothing over 6" at a time. He called me out, and so I bet him for every snow fall we get of 6" or more, I'd give him $5. If it snows twice and is 6" or more at a time, he gets another $5. And if it snows 12" at a time, he gets a straight $10...providing I'm still alive and haven't died of over-excitement.
Next, there's Lutsen. Lutsen has been raking in the great snow thanks in part to Lake Superior. Granted, it's only 2"-5" at a time, but beggers can't be choosers. It *was* just 50 degrees out the other day. Give some slack, eh.
Lastly, if all else fails, there's spring skiing. This year's spring skiing conditions should be great. There's tons of snow for a base, and the melt down this month only compacted it down and turned it into bullet-proof snow that the spring sun will have to fight to melt away. You can expect some nice, creamy mashed potato corn snow this spring.
So hey, Midwest skiers and boarders, turn that frown upside down. Our season isn't over. In fact, it's just now starting to look like the normal Midwest ski conditions we've been used to for the past decade (icy!). We got spoiled with our epic December, so let's not turn tail and run just yet. Give it some time. We'll still have a winter...I'd pay $10 for that fact.
