All the local areas are in great shape, fully open, and covered with plenty of natural snow. I've enjoyed great turns at Lutsen, Spirit, and Mount Bohemia alike. There's no scraping and crunching of icy man-made snow underfoot. Instead, the snow is soft and natural. It hasn't been like this in at least five years, if I recall correctly.
I didn't buy a season pass to Lutsen this year, and I'm kicking myself for it. I've far exceeded the cost of a season pass with the day lift tickets I've purchased so far this season. But it's OK, because having an epic time in the Midwest can't have a price tag on it. So I keep going to Lutsen. I have a pass for Spirit, but rarely go because it's always so icy on the slopes. But just like Lutsen, the conditions at Spirit Mountain are amazing.
And don't even get me started about Mount Bohemia. You can't even understand how great the going it out there.
You can take all of your preconceived notions about the 2008-2009 season in the Midwest and throw them out the window. It's never been a better time to get out there and enjoy it. Sure, we've had our share of cold snaps, but believe me when I say that I've also had my share of Midwest powder days and first tracks. That's right, powder days and first tracks in the Midwest. If you can't stand a little cold for rare skier-treats like that, then you're in the wrong sport.
Now stop reading this, and get out there and enjoy it.
