Went night skiing at Mt. Hood Ski Bowl on Dec 19 with Murphy. Knee-deep pow. Really knee deep. Really pow.
It was the first day of the season that Ski Bowl opened the Upper Chair. Fresh or nearly fresh tracks all night long. Pizzaz (steep pitch under chair right at top) was closed, presumably to keep people from traversing into the Outback bowls (also closed).
It was my first time on my new Volkl Gotama 190s. No poles as usual. The Gotamas were a dream when making fresh tracks, but in the steep chop, I struggled a bit with my rhythm and "over finishing" turns. Submarined twice on steep-to-less-steep transitions due to user error. It can be a bitch to get back up in deep pow.
Double ejected (at speed) on a hidden boulder and flew Super Man-style into another boulder. Knocked out my wind, left some wicked bruises. Very lucky not to be injured. I must admit a friendly patroller warned me about the rock garden just before I dropped in. I expected to hear an "I told you so" when he stopped by my boulder scene, but he was just nice. Later did some unintentional hand-springs after double-ejecting/sticking a deep pow landing. Mildly separated my shoulder in the process. Classic FOOSH injury (fall on outstretched hand). However, snow was so killer, I gritted out another couple runs before packing it in (not smart).
Murphy skied flawlessly (no falls), so I made him drive home. I was completely gassed.
