We excitedly headed up to Wolf Ridge (formerly Wolf Laurel) Saturday morning for a lazy ski day without our teenage daughter.
We prefer to ski the backside of the mountain, the parking lot is level and it makes it easy to just suit up and ski without too much boot walking. Also, I prefer it because I get to ski the run before getting on the lift. The front has several tiered parking lots all with lots of stairs & walking to the lodge.
The snow was pretty good. There are a lot of snowboarders at Wolf and they tend to scrape off the snow leaving ice, so I try to ski the edges as much as possible. I am waiting for them to get more slopes open but they dont' seem to be in a big hurry to do so. The run is nice, the lodge is pretty nice too, at least for here in the South East. Unfortunately, they have no where NEAR enough chairs on the lift there. In fact, you could put two more chairs inbetween the ones that are there, but rumor has it the chairs were $9k each and they choose less chairs in favor of a longer lift. If that wasn't bad enough, the lift operators aren't really managing the lift at all. Sure they'll shut it down if you forget to lower your lap bar but other than that, they don't organize loads, or really say anything. Its a shame to wait in a lift line for 10 minutes or more when there are 2 and 3 people sitting in quad chairs going by every time. It would be so much better if they would just fill every single chair. How hard is that? We often try to organize our own chair as well as the one in front and behind us.
Well.. the front side of the mountain is LOADED with the beginners, although there are more runs for advanced skiiers, most were not open when we went. I'll be excited to get back there and see what else they have now that weather has permitted more snowmaking. The lift lines up front weren't any better organized either.
All in all, I like Wolf best out of our local 3 (Ober, Cataloochee & Wolf) but I have to learn to time my runs opposite of the crowds, or just sit back when they all decide it's time to ski/board. The price for food & lift tix are pretty good, right inline for the area. The food is pretty good as well at both lodges, compared to all the places I've been (inlcuding Hunter & Killington) so I like to go back. The base lodge has a nice outdoor deck upstairs, and a great room with coin video games as well, for those non skiers or when your wanting to take a break.
