I haven't posted too much to OTS recently because I haven't been skiing much. It's all because of a single broken bone...broke while skiing, of course.

Even though this has hampered the amount of time skiing, I still may be far from done-bar this season...
I was riding a new pair of skis at Mont Du Lac, a tiny little mom-and-pop resort in Minnesota. The skis were probably a tad too big for the 400 vertical feet, but hell, they were new and wanted to be skied. So I did. I could only make about 7 turns down the hill, and with each one, my speed increased drastically. This was fine and dandy, until I got off the groomed into what I thought was something fresh. Turns out, it wasn't fresh at all...instead, boilerplate snow. I pushed on to clear the run, and launched off a small roller. When I realized I was going into it too fast for conditions, I tried to scrub speed and lost it...crashing down on my left side, crunching my helmet, knocking the wind out of me, and breaking my collarbone.

That was 2 months ago, and I'm finally getting back into the game. I headed out to Utah about a month ago, and didn't plan on risking skiing. The trip was paid for, and half of the fun of an out-West ski trip is the apres ski. So I went, but the call of the mountains was just too great, and I ended up skiing a few days...taking it very easy and very gentle. In all, it was freakin' worth it.

Since then, I took it easy...not skiing at all, and letting myself heal. At this point, it's still broken, but according to my doc, it's healing. I've gone up to Michigan's Upper Penninsula to ski Mount Bohemia, and then Lutsen Mountains in Minnesota for a corn snow harvest in the past two weeks. Now looking forward, I'm finally gaining a bit of confidence to really get back into things...but spring has sprung, and I feel as if the season has passed me by.

Or has it? Lutsen is guaranteed open until the 15th of April, and the spring skiing up there is epic. Mount Bohemia's closing date is contingent upon the snow conditions, but last year I was skiing there on the 14th of April. On top of that, the gracious folks at OnTheSnow decided to bestow me with a free trip to Utah...which of course has their season last longer than anyone, especially given the fact that they've broken 500" of snow this year.

So is my season over? I don't think so. It'll be a weak season, to be sure...only 18 days on the snow to date. And when I do get back out there, it'll be slow and safe until I'm completely healed. But rest assured that come the 2008/2009 season, I'll be keen to give 'er.
