Not going to get to a real resort for some weeks yet but got a good snow fix last sunday at Xscape in Glasgow (www.xscape.co.uk). Had to drive four hours each way, dress in a gorilla suit and join in a charity event to raise $26,000 for cancer research to get my tix but well worth it. Snow is snow, indoors or out, ski suit or gorilla suit.
Got a bit hot in the suit but it was fun seeing the kids faces looking out at the slope through a viewing window. The drag lift pulled me up a few feet from them each ascent.
There are about 50 indoor snow centres in 20 countries over three continents. Not North America yet though there's one being built in New Jersey at long last (www.meadowlandsxanadu.com), another planned for Vegas (www.lasvegaswet.com). They aren't so good as the real thing of course but have a lot going for them nonetheless. Euro ski resorts even finance them to grow business in the cities. Whistler's owners run one in Madrid, Spain.
