Revelstoke Mountain Resort hopes to showcase the best of the resort and the best of big mountain skiers during the upcoming Freeskiing World Tour. The resort, which signed on for a three-year commitment to the event, will be hosting this year's tour Jan. 6-10.
The Freeskiing World Tour is the largest competitive big mountain freeskiing event and also the longest running. The 2009-10 tour, which launched in La Parve, Chile in September, will spin through six stops on two continents. Revelstoke is a new addition to the tour and serves as the second stop.
The tour lures athletes from all over the world with more than $100,000 in prize money. A $20,000 purse will pay out at Revelstoke. Chopo Diaz from Chile and Jacqui Edgerly from the U.S. snatched up the winning slots in La Parve. Spectators at Revelstoke may get a chance to see the pair defend their rankings.
The schedule at Revelstoke includes qualifying events followed by two days of competition Jan. 8 and Jan. 9. Sunday is reserved as a weather day.
Revelstoke opened for the season in early December. Almost half of its terrain is rated advanced with alpine bowls, chutes, cliffs, and glades building the resort's big mountain skiing reputation. The tour offers a chance for the resort to waltz in the big leagues of gnarly big mountain skiing venues.
