Silverton in southern Colorado is open for the season with its guided-only skiing. Snow started falling as soon as the mountain opened, with blizzard warnings across the area. Silverton received 23 inches of snow in one overnight reading. The most recent storm broke the three foot mark with 38 inches of snow in the two days.

Forty skiers took advantage of a blue sky day on opening day, and enjoyed 1,819 acres for skiing and riding. Boot packers are always hired in those first days Silverton is open, to help pack the slopes in preparation for the season. It helps to stomp down the snow in the avalanche starting zones, and it has to be done early in December.

Silverton is open Thursday through Sunday starting Dec. 28. It's a good place to escape the holiday crowds as it isn't really a family spot. Owner Jen Brill writes, "Our elevation is high and temps stay cold so the snow is usually great with no one to ski it."

April 2-18 has unguided skiing and riding so you can explore the remote area on your own. Silverton is celebrating its tenth year this season.
