Snowshoe Resort finally opened for the 2009-2010 season Dec. 5. It was a long time coming and a welcome addition in the Mid-Atlantic for the bell weather West Virginia resort that historically has been among the first to greet skiers and snowboarders for the season. Only Cataloochee and Sugar, both in North Carolina, managed to open earlier.

Consistent low temperatures in the past week combined with some natural snow have turned around the early season for Snowshoe. Temperatures are expected to stay colder enabling the resort's massive snowmaking infrastucture to kick in.

Snowshoe management has created a number of programs with the economy in mind that are worth noting. Kids 12 and under ski free even on Christmas day when lodging is booked through the resort.

Snowshoe guests get a coupon book worth over $1,000 in savings ranging from shopping and dining discounts to a variety of the resort's "adventure activities." Snowshoe lodging packages provide up to 40 percent off retail prices and time when lodging, lift tickets, rentals, lessons, and other activities can be purchased together.

Snowshoe-owned restaurants are offering additional discounts with a $9.99 dining option at every meal including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

One way to jump start the season at Snowshoe is the Subaru demo day Sunday, Dec. 20. It's an opportunity to try new products offered by suppliers.
