Wintergreen Resort in Virginia is gearing up for its Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas celebration Dec. 19 - Jan. 1. The resort plans to open for the season Dec. 12, weather permitting.
Festivities during the celebration include a holiday crafts display for adults and for kids, Santa on the slopes, and story time with Mrs. Santa. Room rates from Dec. 25 - 31 start at $147 per person per night for studio accommodations. A one-bedroom condo runs $155. Larger units also are available at a per person cost comparable to studio rates. Lodging prices leading up to Christmas offer the greatest value. A studio is priced at $69 and a one-bedroom is $89 per person, per night from opening day to Dec. 24.
The best bet for a price break on lift tickets during the holidays is to corral a group of 20 people or more. Full sessions during the Christmas - New Year holiday week cost $57, compared to $69. Night sessions run $22, instead of $34. Full session rental discounts for groups average $30 for adults compared to $36 for full sessions and $17, compared to $26 for night session rentals. A full session is any eight-hour period from the purchase time. Night skiing lasts from 5 - 10 p.m. and will be held on Monday, Dec. 28. The slopes are generally closed on Mondays.
Riders visiting Wintergreen during the holidays can compete in the Freestyle Night Rail Jam, 6 - 8 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 27. The event is an open jam where riders hike the park and try to get in as many runs as possible during the two hour allotment. Contestants are judged on style, consistency difficulty, and variety.
