Want to learn to ski or snowboard?

Sign up for the free Get Into Skiing/Snowboarding program at Mount Sunapee in Newbury, N.H.

The program offers newcomers a lesson, rental equipment, and a ski lift ticket to the South Peak Learning Area.

The offer begins after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, and runs through Dec. 20.

Sunapee launched the program in 2007. More than 1,000 people have participated so far, and many have become regular skiers and snowboarders.

"Skiing and snowboarding is something that individuals, friends, and family can enjoy for their entire lives," says Maura Gorman, director of the Learning Center at Mount Sunapee. "Early season is a great time for beginners, as they don't need the entire mountain to be open to learn the basics. Then they have all winter to enjoy skiing and snowboarding."

The South Peak Learning Area is a self-contained area designed specifically for teaching adults and children how to ski and snowboard. South Peak has 13 trails and slopes and five lifts, including a slow-moving quad chair and two carpet lifts.

Reservations are required this year. The program offers one session per person, is available to first-time skiers and snowboarders, and the lift ticket to the South Peak Learning area is issued after the lesson.
