Arizona's Mt. Lemmon, located one hour from Tucson, claims fame as the southernmost ski area in the U.S. Two lifts and one surface tow service 21 trails. With its base at 8,200 feet, snows cover the slopes usually in time for a mid-December opening while saguaros line the valley floor far below.
But the adjacent little resort town of Summerhaven draws the après ski crowd. A quick 1.5-mile drive puts you at Mt. Lemmon Café, known for its pie: berry pies with crumb topping, sour cream apple pie, and Belgain chocolate pecan pie. Cozy up next to the wood stove and savor the pie. At nearly $7 a slice, it's big, but known to be worth it.
