Lutsen Mountains, the Heartland's largest ski resort - in size (1,000 acres) and vertical feet (over 800) - will open for the season Saturday, Nov. 21, weather permitting. When it's fully open you have close to 100 runs that plunge off four mountain peaks. Arguably, it offers some of the best skiing and riding found around the Great Lakes Region. Located along Lake Superior's north shore in Minnesota's Arrowhead, the scenery is spectacular.
Lutsen has celebrated the opening of the ski season with a Thanksgiving Festival in years past Events have included turkey bowling, scavenger hunts, fireworks, and sleigh rides and, of course, some good early season skiing and riding. Lutsen is the only Heartland ski resort to guarantee that they will have 25 runs open by the first weekend of December. That's nearly 10 miles of trail with Lutsen's long runs; more than twice the terrain offered by many Midwest resorts even when fully open.
They added a new triple chair on Eagle Mountain last summer that will exit right on top near the radio tower; no more hiking up to access the top of those wonderful chutes that careen down the front face of the mountain. Bring on the snow.
