A travel Web site is offering skiers and boarders the chance to build their own skiing holidays with low-cost carriers, transfers or car hire, and ski accommodation. Results have shown that 'build your own' ski holidays are up to 35 percent cheaper than their pre-packaged equivalents.
For example, the site quotes Hotel Schloss Lebenberg, Kitzbuehel, Austria where a skiing holiday over February half-term, based on two people in a five-star hotel, including half-board and flights from Gatwick, varies between £1388 per person with ‘build your own' (including car hire) and £1802 per person for a pre-packaged holiday (including shared coach transfer). This offers a potential saving of up to £414 per person.
Tim Anderson, director of SkiingHolidays.com, said: "Skiers are becoming savvier in finding ways to cut costs to stay on the slopes, with 40 percent of holidaymakers looking to book late, a third choosing to build their own skiing holidays using low-cost flights, and 75 percent of independent skiers investigating car hire as a cheaper alternative to often expensive transfers. After an estimated 20 percent fall in the number of skiers hitting the slopes last season, we are forecasting a positive, though cautious, return to the coming season."
A survey by the company found that confidence is returning to the ski industry with 80 percent of skiers who did not ski last year planning to return to the slopes this season. The survey, which received around 1500 responses, also revealed that 22 percent of British skiers are planning to spend less on their holiday this season, while 14 percent plan to spend more.
