Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort is scheduled to be, yet again, the first ski resort in New Mexico to open for 2009-10. Located just 20 miles south of Taos, the family and wallet-friendly haven will offer $15 lift tickets for opening weekend, Nov. 21, through Dec. 11. Regular season rates are $39 for adults. But if you're 40, you ski free all season long. Not 39; not people "in their 40s." This deal is just for 40-year-olds in lasting honor of James Coleman, Sipapu's managing partner.

Coleman turned 40 in 2007 and declared free skiing for his fellow 40-year-olds to celebrate his birthday. The idea was so popular that the resort does it every year. You'll have to present identification and proof of age at the time of lift ticket purchase so no lying.

Children six and under, 4th graders, and seniors 70 "and better" also ski free every day at Sipapu.

Season passes are still on sale for everyone else looking for savings. Passholders will get three free days at Angel Fire Resort, Monarch Mountain, Pajarito Mountain, and Red River Ski Area in addition to their Sipapu privileges.

Sipapu has been a family-run business since 1952, and they make sure that families connect...without technology. Be warned before you go: there's no cell service at the resort or TVs in the rooms (although you can get your TV and WiFi fix in the River Café).
