Online specialists ski travel agency IfYouSki has a long list of ever-changing deals for the coming winter, including some spectacular savings, even at peak periods like Christmas and New Year's.

Deals available include Christmas in Austria with savings of £270 for seven nights at the three-star Hotel Harfenwirt in Niederau, priced at £399 (was £669). The price includes flights, transfers and half-board accommodation. Depart from London Gatwick or Bournemouth Dec. 19.

Niederau is one of four villages in Wildschönau, three have separate ski areas which are marketed together. Oberau is a tiny village close to the dense lift network of larger neighbours Auffach and Niederau, to which it is not lift-linked, A free local bus service links all three villages which also participate in the huge Kitzbüheler Alpen pass offering around 1000 kilometres of trails on one ticket.

Similarly, New Year's in Wengen, Switzerland, is available with a £160 saving for seven nights at Hotel Bernerhof, Wengen priced at £594 (was £754). The price includes flights, transfers, and half-board accommodation. Depart from London Gatwick Dec. 26.

Wengen is a very picturesque resort that has welcomed skiers since the turn of the century. It is a car-free town, with life centred on the railway (which ultimately reaches Europe's highest station) and a spectacular back drop of the Eiger as well as the Mönch and Jungfrau. It's the site of the world-famous Lauberhorn race.
