The famous Altstadt Christmas Market will return to the ‘Capital of the Alps' Nov. 20-Dec. 27, 2009. Innsbruck's old town will once again come alive with colourful market stalls, children's entertainment, and live music.

The city's snow-capped mountain peaks provide the ideal backdrop for a spot of Christmas shopping. Every year the medieval Altstadt square, in front of the city's infamous Golden Roof, is transformed into a traditional Austrian Christmas market.

Daily festivities will take place between 11 a.m and 8:30 p.m each day. Maria-Theresien-Strasse in Innsbruck's historic old town will be lined with beautifully decorated stalls selling Christmas ornaments, Tyrolean handicrafts, candles, and Christmas pastries.

Life-sized characters of giants, princesses, and mythical creatures will be wondering the streets and the evening tunes of the Turmblaser brass band will help create the festive mood.

The Innsbruck Markplatz will host daily entertainment for children, including Punch and Judy, storytellers, and the animals of the petting zoo.

The capital city of the Austrian Tyrol is surrounded by some of the best skiing in Austria. The ski regions of the Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck offer access to 285 kilometres of pistes for all levels of skier and snowboarder. Within easy reach of the city are the ski resorts of Igls, Mutters, Patscherkogel, Hafelekar, Axamer Lizum, and Seefeld. Innsbruck is also two-time host of the Winter Olympic Games.
