Boreal's snowmaking efforts paid off this year with the earliest opening in the resort's history. Boreal cranked up the Castle Peak Quad lift Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, breaking its previous early opening by two days. The resort is also the first to open in California this year.

"Before the lift opened, there was already a crowd building," Boreal's Jon Slaughter, told OnTheSnow. "People are really excited." Slaughter also noted that one of the first people waiting in line to ride the lift this morning was an 82-year-old man.

The Tahoe resort has one groomed trail and a terrain park with six features available to skiers and riders. A storm rolled through earlier this week, dropping three to five inches of new snow Oct 4 on the swath of machine-made snow lining the South 40 run. But 60-degree temperatures yesterday melted the new snow back to what Slaughter termed "a white ribbon."

Snow is snow, however, and Boreal is hyped. "There's a buzz in the air," said Slaughter.

Lift tickets have been reduced in price: $15 for kids 5-12 years old and $30 for those older than 13 years, including adults. Boreal plans to continue running its lift  through Sunday, Oct. 11, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., conditions permitting, until snowmaking and natural snow allow opening more lifts. Ticket rates will be adjusted based on lifts and runs available.

The fifth Annual Jibassic Public Invitational Event will take place Oct.10-11. Boreal plans to hand out $2,000 from noon to 4 p.m. on both days for best trick in the public park. Spectators can watch the Team Video Challenge video sessions from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Tahoe's weather for opening weekend is expected to be balmy, but then may yo-yo into a second storm system next week. Check the OnTheSnow.com daily condition reports to follow resorts opening for the season.

Mammoth opens tomorrow after this week's storm dumped 6 feet of snow on the upper mountain with lower elevations getting a couple of feet. It's Mammoth's earliest opening in 15 years, and the resort is opening four weeks ahead of schedule.

In Europe the Austrian Alps picked up three new feet of early season snow, the biggest snowfall in 25 years. The glaciers should be phenomenal.

I skied A-Basin today. Really nice snow for so early. The Legend picked up 5 new inches overnight. A-Bay should be opening more terrain soon. I hear the skiing's nice over on Loveland, too, for mid-October.

Breck already has a nice proto-base building above 11,500' due to early snowstorms and cold temperatures. It already looks a lot like mid-November up there. The wind is re-distributing snow, and the bowls are already filling in. Breck might be opening a lot of terrain early this year if this keeps up! Breck will open Nov. 12.

Things are really picking up out in the Pacific Ocean. The MJO has gone active. The first big storm in the Sierra might, hopefully, be the first in a series of Pacific storms. Maybe we'll get a good old Pineapple Express.

Weather is not the same as climate; Global Warming refers to climate. When discussing 'climate' talk about trends that occur over a period of at least several years. The recent cold weather at Boreal does not disprove Global Warming, just as the recent warm weather at Alyeska does not prove it.
