The Stubai glacier, set at 3000 metres, opened for skiing Sept. 19, 2009 with some new additions to its ski area.
The summit platform Top Of Tyrol has recently been ‘winterized' which will enable it to stay open throughout the winter months this year. Also the use of snow-cannons has made it possible to ski an even larger area of the glacier.
The glacier will also be hosting a range of returning events: the Sportscheck Glacier Testival 2009 Nov. 5-8; Saac Camp On The Stubai Glacier Nov. 14-15; the Stubai Telemark Festival Nov. 20-22; and the Stubai Jam March 13, 2010.
The Sportscheck Glacier Testival 2009 is the biggest equipment trials in the Alps with more than 3500 winter sports items from 35 leading manufacturers. The event features equipment trials, taster courses with the ski school, LVS education, avalanche rescue, and an après ski party every day.
Two SAAC Basic Camps will take place on the Stubai glacier; Nov. 14-15, 2009 and May 8-9, 2010. These two-day avalanche camps offer basic knowledge to reduce the risks. Registered mountain leaders inform participants about the risks and the correct behaviour on the slope.
The Stubai Jam takes place March 13, 2010 on the glacier for the fourth time. This slopestyle contest attracts international skiers and snowboarders.
