Much of New Zealand's South Island was cut off by snowstorms this week when storms blanketed Queenstown and Wanaka with up to fifty centimetres of snow. Airports and roads were closed, sending Queenstown's annual ten day Winterfestival into chaos. It's good news for the area's ski fields with the Remarkables opening day on Sunday being filled with powder. Australasia's only dedicated freestyle resort, Snow Park opened on the weekend and Treble Cone opened on Tuesday, June 26. The last of the commercial fields to open this winter, Cardrona, is scheduled to launch their season on Thursday while Coronet Peak kicked off their night skiing on Tuesday with some Winterfestival events on the mountain. There's more snow forecast for this week with major low level storms that could once again cut off residents in the southern part of the South Island. Clearly the ski fields are happy as the snow co-incides with the start of the Australian school holidays, bringing many skiers and boarders into the area.
