The Edge of Never, the long-awaited ski documentary based on the book of the same name, is finally ready for its Utah premiere, and ushers in the 2009-10 ski season. Written and produced by Salt Lake City resident Bill Kerig, the movie makes its Wasatch Front debut Sept. 23 in Salt Lake City and Sept. 24 in Park City.

Kerig wrote the book after his ski documentary Steep went south and turned into a film he didn't quite recognize. Destined to tell the story of big mountain skiing his way, Kerig wrote his book about one man's quest to ski in his father's tracks in conjunction with filming and editing a movie of the same title. As one of the original producers of Steep, Kerig wanted Steep to focus on teenager Kye Petersen's pilgrimage to Chamonix, France, to ski the couloir that killed his father and extreme skiing icon, Trevor Petersen. Three generations of skiers mentor Kye as he attempts to finish his father’s final run.

Instead, the film shifted gears and centered around Doug Combs and a tragic need to push the envelope rather than celebrating the mountains and a skier's way of life. Kerig reacquired the rights to the footage he shot and produced, and hunkered down to make the movie he always wanted to make.

The Edge of Never is a true coming of age tale about the tribe of skiers who challenge the biggest, most dangerous mountains in the world. See The Edge of Never at the Tower Theater on Sept. 23 at 7 p.m., in Park City at 7 p.m. at The Egyptian Theater Sept. 24  and in Ogden, Monday, Sept. 28, at 7 p.m. at Peery's Egyptian Theater.
