Sunburst Ski Area, near Milwaukee, completed a million dollar expansion of the ski area's support center last year and, this past summer, doubled its snowmaking capacity.
Last season's expansion included a new maintenance facility, first-aid room, ski patrol training center, and the entire 10,000-square-foot building is now "green" heated with geo-thermal radiant in-floor heating. It also included state-of-the-art lighting for the ski hill that helped to reduce energy costs. The 16 new snow guns purchased for this season continue the green theme, use far less energy, and provide more efficient horsepower to produce snow.
"The new snowguns will save almost 300 tons of carbon dioxide over their lifetime," said owner Jim Engel. "The new, efficient guns will allow us to open faster and recover more quickly from winter thaws. We are ready to start making snow at the first sign of cold temperatures in late October or November."
Season passes are now on sale for $189. If you have a snowsports buddy who hasn't been a previous pass holder at Sunburst the two of you can purchase two passes for $368. But hurry, the offer will expire soon.
The Engels have been operating the ski area since 1984. They have added several new runs, new lifts, 100-percent lighting and snowmaking coverage, three terrain parks over the years and one of the best tubing operations in the Badger State.
