Down At Chestnut Mountain's Sunset Grille

The view from the Sunset Grille. The view from the Sunset Grille.

At A Glance

Where: Chestnut Mountain Resort, 8700 West Chestnut Road, Galena, Illinois 61036

When: Oct 31, 2009

Cost: Fill-A-Quad early season pass sale runs through October. Passes are $275 per person purchased in blocks of four.

Don Henley sang "down at the Sunset Grill," staring at auburn skies and watching the working girls go by."  At Chestnut Mountain you stare at auburn skies and watch the mighty Mississippi River roll by.

The Sunset Grille is Chestnut's newest restaurant, and both the food and the view are superb.  The restaurant, perched high on a bluff overlooking the Upper Mississippi River Valley, features a 1,400-square-foot dining deck that offers everything from a scenic three-state view, breathtaking auburn sunsets, bird watching, and exceptional food.  Eagles, pelicans, and blue birds can often be seen along the river corridor from the 500-foot bluff.

Located near historic Galena, Ill., where practically the whole town is on the National Historic Register, it makes a great fall trip while you can still enjoy sitting outside on the deck.  The new restaurant is a year-round operation and will also be open during the winter season when you can still enjoy that incomparable view; just not from the deck.

Chestnut's Fill-A-Quad early season passes sale started Sept. 1 and runs through October.  The passes, which are $275 per person, must be purchased in blocks of four and are only available online.  Gather a few friends and save some money.  Individual unlimited season passes start at $300 and go up to $450 by the start of the season.

It's Chestnut's 50th Anniversary Season.  Stay tuned throughout the season for lots of anniversary specials.  I will be passing them along to you just as fast as I receive them.  It will be a great season for a visit.
