Russia's 2014 Olympic resort of Krasnaya Polyana has the potential to be one of the world's leading resorts, and the country had already imported Vail executives and international ski area designers to help make it so before it was awarded the 2014 Olympics.
Now development has stepped up another gear, with the support of billionaires, major corporations and keen skier Russian President Vladimir Putin – finance and political support do not seem to be problems. President Putin has inaugurated a new three kilometre (two mile) long tunnel which connects the Black Sea resort and airport of Sochi in southern Russia with the increasingly popular Krasnaya Polyana ski resort. The tunnel should dramatically reduce journey times to the ski area. Now it's high speed chairs, gondolas and all the other international standard resort infrastructure – a novelty for Russians until now, that's going in.
