Black Mountain Hosts Red Parka Regatta March 25

Black hosts the 9th Annual Red Parka Regatta March 25 Black hosts the 9th Annual Red Parka Regatta March 25

Black hosts the 9th Annual Red Parka Regatta March 25, at which contestants ride their craft down a luge track in costume. Fastest time wins.

Folks can build their own craft - no skis or boards - or borrow a kayak at the mountain.

Entry fee: $15 solo, $25 for craft with crews. Registration begins at noon, races start at 1 p.m. sharp.

Prizes awarded for fastest time, best costumes, and best craft.

All proceeds go to the Red Parka Scholarship fund. Amoskeag Beverages is sponsor of the event.

The Annual Spring Splash will be held March 28, when the hardy of spirit and brave of heart attempt to skim across an icy cold pond

A lift ticket buys admission to the pond skimming contest, live music by Jeff Conley and friends, Moat Mountain Brewery suds, grilled food, swag, and free appetizers at The Shovel Handle Pub beginning at 4:30 p.m.

This traditional rite of spring is probably better for spectators than participants, who always seem imbued with a spirit of hope over experience.

Black Mountain in Jackson, N.H., has 40 trails and glades on 143 acres, served by a triple chairlift, a double, and two surface lifts, a vertical of 1,100 feet, and 98 percent snowmaking.
