In an era of over-engineered gear bags, Topo Design’s Klettersack is like an oxygen mask full of fresh air. Like many of the Colorado-based company’s products, the Klettersack uses only the necessary features to get the job done. The result is a sharp looking, user-friendly hiking companion that’s perfect for a day spent exploring the wild.

Favorite Features

The outside of the Klettersack relies on a few staple features, including leather lash tabs, side pockets and heavy-duty plastic buckles. The 1000D Cordura fabric feels like it can stand up to some abuse and the shoulder straps are thick and easily adjustable. We loved the interior laptop sleeve and the coated pack cloth interior, which includes an inner drawstring closure. The top of the Klettersack includes a large zippered pocket for easy access to important items.

On-Trail Performance

During a short day hike, we found the Klettersack to be both lightweight and comfortable. The shoulder straps cinched easily into place with a full pack load, giving the pack a secure feel when scrambling over rocks. The side pockets offered plenty of room for a water bottle and rain jacket.

Not too big, not too small. The Klettersack is a great option for both the short and tall hiker. Depending on how you stuff the interior, the Klettersack can feel a bit lumpy against your back—placing a camera or any other solid items near the top should fix this issue.

Room for Improvement

No complaints here. Sure, you could argue for more bells and whistles, but this pack’s simplicity is why we love it so much in the first place.
