Gear in Review: California Cowboy High Sierra Flannel

10th March 2017 | James Robles

California Cowboy flannel

OnTheSnow reviewed this California Cowboy mid layer, which is available during the 2016/2017 ski season.

You don’t have to be the best skier on the top of the mountain to dominate the après scene at its bottom. With a little help from California Cowboy (an apparel company based out of San Francisco) and their stylish High Sierra flannel, you can ensure your base-area aura reigns supreme.

Favorite Features

It’s important to note that the High Sierra isn’t just a legit looking flannel that speaks to the wearer’s laid-back sensibilities and love for all things rustic and plaid. This cozy flannel (see cotton thermal interior) is designed specifically to enhance the après experience, relying on go-to features like a reinforced bottle pocket, dry pocket (for electronics and such), sunglass loop and hidden glove loop. We loved the array of party-favors that were included with this shirt, including a bottle opener, beer koozie and deck of conversation cards. The High Sierra comes in a variety of fun colorways for both men and women.

On-Snow Performance

The High Sierra performed well when temps dropped thanks to the uber-soft thermal interior. Although this flannel is form fitting, it moved well while throwing up high fives and tossing bean bags into small wooden holes. Features like the reinforced bottle pocket and dry pocket felt up to any task and did their respective jobs keeping loose ends where they belonged.

The modern fit looked razor sharp, however, didn’t leave much room for a spare tire. While we’d agree that the High Sierra fits true to size, consider sizing up if you’re looking for extra room to layer.

Room for Improvement

The complaint box for the High Sierra is nearly empty. If pressed, we’d like to see a bit more room around the wrists, which felt unnecessarily snug when buttoned.

Price & Purchase

This mountain flannel runs $148 via the brand website: California Cowboy
