Annecy and the Haute-Savoie have joined forces in their candidature to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Winter Games. The National Olympic Committee will make its final decision on March 18, 2009.
The campaign "Backing Annecy / Haute-Savoie For 2018" is supported by regional tourist boards as well as a whole host of personalities from the world of sport. The 2018 Winter Olympic Games will bring the expertise of major competitions to an area that already offers a good quality of transport and accommodation as well as 80-per-cent of the necessary sports facilities. More information on the ‘Backing Annecy' campaign is available online.
The Haute-Savoie is home to 110 ski resorts with beautiful landscapes and plenty of opportunities for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, off-pisting, family-friendly ski areas, and freestyle snowboarding. In the heart of the region lies Lake Annecy which is surrounded by numerous winter resorts.
Although there is no skiing directly in Annecy, the nearest resorts include: Semnoz, La Clusaz, Le Grand Bornand, Manigod, Saint Jean de Sixt, Les Saisies and Megeve. Larger ski areas are dotted around Lake Annecy, such as Meribel in the Three Valleys and Tignes. France last hosted the Winter Olympics in 1992.
