SEVEN SPRINGS, Pa. – Seven Springs Mountain Resort and Hidden Valley Resort began to make snow last night! The arrival of consistently cold weather allowed the resorts’ mountain crews to turn on the snow guns Tuesday night and run them until Wednesday morning.
“The return of cold weather and the opportunity to fire up the snowmaking systems at Seven Springs andHiddenValleyis an exciting time for our team,” saidEric Mauck, the resorts’ chief executive officer. “We are committed to providing our guests with excellent snowmaking and grooming and our mountain crew will take advantage of every opportunity to make snow in preparation for opening day.”
While an opening date has not been finalized, the resorts plan to resume snowmaking late Friday night or Saturday morning and run them continuously through the weekend, as weather permits.
There are three vital ingredients in snowmaking: water, compressed air and proper outside temperature. Snowmaking can begin at 28 degrees if the humidity is low, but the quantity of snow produced in those conditions is minimal. At 26 degrees and lower, the snowmaking really starts to get going and one to several inches can be produced each hour. The colder the conditions, the more snow the guns can turn out.
The outside air temperature is a rough guide for determining when snowmaking can begin. As temperatures drop from the upper 20s, the snowmaking team will start using test towers to monitor the conditions. When the team determines that the time is right, they will start up the equipment and begin making snow.
