Leave it to Colorado’s Monarch Mountain to go out with local style during its last two weekends of winter operations on April 6 and 14. As the snowpack melts and gives way to raging rivers, Monarch plans to honor both snow sports and water sports.

Paddlers and creek boaters can get an early start to the kayak season with Monarch’s annual Kayaks on Snow event on April 6. Contestants will take a page from skicross events and will race head-to-head down a course full of berms, banks and bumps, before ending their wild ride in an icy pond. Registration is open to willing participants for $10 per person and includes an event t-shirt.

On April 14, pull out the portable grill and light up for one final hurrah with the Parking Lot Cook-Off and Tailgate Party. Pick your method (charcoal vs. gas) and your meat and get to grillin’ during this friendly – and edible – afternoon competition. A panel of judgmental taste buds will crown the ultimate parking lot grill master. Top winners will receive plenty of swag, including a free 2013-14 season pass to Monarch Mountain that’s up for grabs. Contestants will be judged on tailgating décor, cooking spirit and, of course, flavorful eats. For more info on the cook-off, click here.
