Mt. Baker Ski Area is one of those retro national forest ski areas that does not have a base village full of condos. Funky old lodges and private rental cabins line the highway leading up to the Washington ski area, but luxury lodging is generally out of the question.
Now, one of Bellingham’s luxury lodges is offering a package for skiers and snowboarders. Hotel Bellwether, located a 90-minute drive from Mt. Baker Ski Area, has put together a package that includes lift tickets, breakfast, accommodations, and an après hot toddy for two.
Hotel Bellwether sits on Bellingham Bay with an adjacent free-standing three-storey replica of a lighthouse. Its signature Lighthouse Bar and Grill offers sunset views over the water. Many of the rooms also overlook the bay. With a spa onsite, skiers can pamper sore muscles after a day on the slopes. Spacious rooms can include marble countertops, a fireplace, jetted soaking tub, balcony, and king bed with luxury linens. The hotel includes amenities such as a fitness center, Internet access, and secure underground parking.
The package for skiers and snowboarders starts at $293.50 per night. Vouchers for rental gear can be added by purchasing them at the front desk. The package also comes with a weather guarantee: if the weather is bad, you can get a refund on the lift tickets in the package.
For spring skiers and snowboarders, March can hold a boon of snow. The last two winters at Mt. Baker have tallied up more than 800 inches each of snowfall with more than a quarter of that snow falling each March. That translates into powder turns in spring.
Mt. Baker is scheduled to operate chairlifts daily through April 6. The ski area will then open Fridays through Sundays throughout April, pending weather and snow conditions.
