Sun Valley gets its name from an average of 250 days of sunshine per year. In spring, when the snow morphs into soft corn, the resort celebrates the sun with Solfest, a crazy no-holds-barred ski and music event.

This year, Sun Valley’s Solfest is scheduled for March 22-24, 2013. While free events on the slopes and in town dominate the weekend, college students on spring break can get discounted lift tickets.

Friday’s activities start with a party on the deck of Whiskey Jacques. A rail jam, DJ Train, and live band follow. That just sets the stage for Saturday’s activity on the ski slopes.

The APRES, which stands for Advance Protocol for Ridiculous Endeavors in Sun Valley, takes place on Baldy. Competitors use a golf card type scoring system to amass or lose points. Points are gained for vertical, tricks, tours, skate traverses, first or last chair, skinning uphill, costumes, retro gear, and a long laundry list of behaviors that include bragging, boozing, and disrobing. The complete list is available online.

During APRES, penalty points are subtracted for screw ups: crashes, losing skis, yard sales, tomahawks, and injuries. Any mention of Jackson Hole immediately removes 1,000 points.

At the end of the day, the person with the most APRES points wins. Other prizes go to best costumes, best team, and top overall performance.

The Solfest ends with a street concert finale. Ketchum shuts down Main Street for an evening of outdoor dancing with DJs and live music followed by more dancing with a live band in Whiskey Jacques.

Special lift ticket rates are available for college students with ID for Solfest: Three days of skiing costs $99 between March 20-31 for students with valid college identification. Discounted lift tickets are also available if purchased in advance online.
