Fernie Alpine Resort garners a name for deep snow and a big mountain feel for skiing. Its five big bowls drape with plenty of steep lines and off piste touring. But the British Columbia resort also has family-friendly skiing.

Of course, the resort has all the usual family necessities: lessons, rentals, slopeside lodging, and daycare. But beyond that, families can find fun on the slopes together.

Each of Fernie’s five bowls has groomer runs, and the sides offer perfect places to work onto the off piste with kids. You can take the kids on tree tours in the upper elevations, while they may lead you through special kids trails near the base area.

Fernie’s skier cross course is built for family fun rather than high-end competitions. The course starts and ends with rollers, but features a continuous snake of banked turns in the middle. The whole family can race together or ski it individually. A special skier cross pass costs $5, available at Guest Services.

Families can get deals to stay at Fernie either slopeside or downtown. This spring, several lodging properties are offering a fourth night free and 50 percent off the fourth day of skiing.

For spring break vacations, the ski in-ski out Lizard Creek Lodge is offering a midweek discount for stays Sunday through Thursday nights. A two-night minimum stay is required. The package, which is available through April 15, 2013, combines discounted lodging with discounted lift tickets. For families, Lizard Creek has one-bedroom units that come with or without a loft.
