National Brotherhood of Skiers Visits Snowmass

Black skiers and snowboarders from across the United States are spending the end of the month in Aspen and Snowmass. This is the 40th anniversary for the National Brotherhood of Skiers. The Black Ski Summit is Feb. 23 through March 2. This year’s theme is “Celebrate-Reflect-Renew.”

The anniversary summit will bring together thousands of African-American winter sports enthusiasts. Diana Starks is the NBS President. She says the anniversary this year is momentous as well as a milestone. ”We are very excited to return to Snowmass to commemorate and reflect on our achievements over the years.  Snowmass is one of the premiere mountains and our members look forward to returning to the resort’s beautiful scenic surroundings and ski terrains fit for all levels of skiing and snowboarding.  Snowmass has always been exciting during our past visits and we look forward to seeing how the resort will enhance our celebration.”

The Summit is also a fundraiser, which supports the NBS Olympic Scholarship Fund. It is designed to provide financial support for exceptional athletes of color who excel in winter sports.

The Summit also provides an economic impact to the host resort and surrounding communities. The National Brotherhood of Skiers reports that members are expected to spend more than $500,000 during the week the event is held in Snowmass.

Aspen Skiing Company Director of Public Relations Jeff Hanle says it is a huge impact. “This is an awesome group to have in the resort and we are excited to have them here. They not only bring a big piece of valuable business, they also bring exposure and outreach.”

Aspen/Snowmass has a lot planned as well. “We roll out the red carpet, especially on this, their 40th anniversary Summit. There will be fireworks, a torchlight parade, speeches by the mayors, and tons of parties,” says Hanle.
