When cancer claimed founder Louis Gheller, the new owners of Michigan’s Big Powderhorn Mountain, in the heart of the western Upper Peninsula’s big snow country, wanted to both commemorate and contribute.
So for the fourth consecutive year, Powderhorn is sponsoring a special Ski For A Cure Weekend, Friday and Saturday, March 8-9.
It begins on Friday with the annual Louis Gheller Memorial Race, named for the resort’s long-time president. It takes place under the lights with two timed runs. The fastest combined time on the full length of its Ricochet run wins, and $5 of each entry will be contributed to the American Cancer Society and a local hospice program.
The race kicks off other fun, combining its Hawaii Splash Weekend, with prizes for skiers and riders in the most colorful island garb. Then racers don black bags and slither down a run to see who arrives first in the garbage bag penguin race.
Lots of brats and other food will be available, with a portion from every lift ticket also going to fight cancer.
Still other fun is on tap at the resort, including special pricing of $10 off lift tickets for students with I.D., and one free child's ticket with purchase of a regular adult ticket all season, a $36 savings.
While you’re there, check out the restaurants, bars and pool in Powderhorn’s new $4.5 million 35,000-square-foot lodge, built after a fire took out the original structure last season.
