The Swatch Skiers Cup has pitted world-class skiers against eachother for the past two years. The competition featured riders from Team Europe squaring off against Team Americas in Big-Mountain and Backcountry Slopestyle Events in head to head matchups in Valle Nevado, Chile. Team Europe took the inaugural event in 2011 and Team Americas stormed back in September 2012 to even the score. This February (Feb. 10 - 15), the event moved to Switzerland, Zermatt to be exact, and the Team Europe took home the Swatch Skiers Cup in 2013.
SEE THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM DAY ONE HERE:
The Europeans came out firing, with Sverre Liliequist (SWE) defeating Josh Daiek (USA) and Fabio Studer (AUT) defeating Rory Bushfield (CAN), but Team Americas Captain Cody Townsend (USA) fired back with a victory over Richard Permin (FRA) to pull within a point. With a Sam Favret (FRA) victory over Tim Dutton (USA), who was forced to withdraw from further competition after an injury stemming from a double backflip attempt, it looked like the competition could be a blowout. Luckily for Team Americas, Squaw Valley local Greg Lindsey (USA) defeated Nicolas Vulgnier (SUI) and KC Deane (USA) beat Paddy Graham (UK) to pull Team Americas into a 3-3 tie with the Europeans.
From there the Europeans pulled into a different gear, winning 6 of the next 7 matchups: Markus Eder (ITA) def. Logan Imlach (USA), Kaj Zackrisson (SWE) def. Charley Ager (CAN); Round 2: Cody Townsend (USA) def. Nicolas Vuignier (SUI), Fabio Studer (AUT) def. KC Deane (USA), Sam Favret (FRA) def. Greg Lindsey (USA), Sverre Liliequist (SWE) def. Rory Bushfield (CAN), Richard Permin (FRA) def. Josh Daiek (USA).
Although the snow looked great, it was apparent from the beginning that it was a bit unstable, with skiers fighting a ton of sluff during their runs. In the end, back to back slides and deteriorating conditions forced the competition to come to a close early, with the Europeans taking Day 1 by a score of 11-5.
The Backcountry Slopestyle Competition will take place Thursday, February 14 at 9 a.m., to decide the winner of the 2013 Swatch Skiers Cup.
