This February, British Columbia joins other provinces in Canada in celebrating Family Day, a statutory holiday. For skiing and snowboarding families, British Columbia ski resorts are rolling out the discounts on lift tickets for the province’s first Family Day.

British Columbia prepares to celebrate its first Family Day on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013. While several other provinces celebrate Family Day concurrent with President’s Day in the U.S., British Columbia bumped its holiday a week earlier. For skiers and snowboarding families, the placement of the new holiday spreads crowds on the slopes out over two weekends.

Many British Columbia ski resorts are giving discounts on lift tickets on Family Day for residents of the province. In order to get the discount, most resorts require photo ID with residency to be shown at the ticket window at the time of purchase. The discounts on single day lift tickets for Feb. 11 is 50 percent off the regular ticket window rate.

Some of the resorts offering 50 percent off lift tickets on the B.C. Family Day include Apex, Big White, Fernie, Kicking Horse, Kimberley, Grouse Mountain, Hemlock, Lost Lake Cross Country, Manning Park, Mt. Washington, Mt. Seymour, Panorama, Red Mountain, Revelstoke, Silver Star, Sun Peaks, Whistler Blackcomb, Whistler Olympic Park, and Whitewater.

A handful of resorts are also offering Family Day lift and lodging packages. Families can get multi-night lift and lodging packages over the Family Day long weekend at Fernie Alpine Resort, Kimberley Alpine Resort, Big White Resort, Silver Star Mountain, Sun Peaks Resort, and Whistler Blackcomb.

A few resorts, such as Revelstoke and Mt. Seymour, are offering Family Day discounts on tubing for families, too.

Families can also find other discounts at ski resorts for this winter through Tourism B.C. Discounts include ski and stay packages, heli and cat skiing, and some special kids rent or ski free programs. Tourism B.C. also is running a contest until March 31 for someone to win a round trip ski vacation to one of 13 ski resorts in the province for four people.
