Idaho’s Sun Valley Resort, once the skier haunt of Hollywood glamour, is returning to its roots. Its growing winter film festival melds together several days of movies, awards, and Hollywood notables with days on the slopes.
The second Sun Valley Film Festival is slated for March 14-17, 2013. Visitors can hit the slopes for skiing or snowboarding during the day and catch films for après in the evening. Sun Valley Resort is also offering ski, screen, and stay packages for those who want to do it all.
The Sun Valley Film Festival has lined up more than 60 films to be shown in Sun Valley and Hailey. Films include premieres, kids' programs, new television previews, and movies by independent filmmakers. The Sun Valley Film Festival features categories of shorts, mixed media, animation, feature length documentaries or narratives, and young filmmakers — a new category this year. Other events fill out the schedule with parties, filmmaker talks and discussions, dinners, après, and a closing awards ceremony.
Even though the festival is only in its second year, Hollywood turns out for it. Academy Award winner Jodie Foster will be the featured guest this year, presenting a morning coffee talk about her work and answering audience questions. She will also be presenting the Vision Award. Other film producers and directors are also scheduled to participate in this year’s festival, including Jim Burke of The Descendents, Josh Pate of Mirror Mirror, Will McCormack of Celeste & Jesse Forever, and Jonas Pate of Shrink.
Sun Valley Resort is offering several lodging packages that include discounted rates for the film festival with accommodations in Sun Valley Lodge or Inn. For skiers and snowboarders, one package combines three days of lift tickets, three nights of lodging, and a film festival pass for 12 screenings. It costs $437 per person for double occupancy or $686 for single occupancy.
