The Mary Jane side of Winter Park is famous for some of the best bump runs in North America. Now, you can get even better on the bumps with Bob’s Mogul Camp. “We’re North America’s Mogul Capitol!” That’s what Bob Barnes says. He’s the Winter Park Ski & Ride School Director and head of Bob’s Mogul Camp.
It’s a three-day deal offered two more times this season, on Feb. 13-15 or March 1-3. “Those in the camp build their skills in three days,” says Barnes. “We use video analysis on the first and third day so we can see the before and after.”
Barnes adds that they work on technique and movement first, followed by tactics. “Once their technique is developed, they can go where they want, when they want, and at the speed they want. This way they’re in control of both their skis and the mountain, rather than the skis and the mountain controlling them.”
Barnes says Winter Park has had strong success with the Mogul Camp. “Our track record is that we have never had anybody who is not satisfied.”
The cost is $519 for three days, and it does not include lift tickets. It does include an après party with hot food and beverages in the Moffat Room at the Mary Jane Base Lodge. You can also get free demo skis, a T-Shirt and more than six hours of instruction per day. The camp is for novices and experts. Groups are based on ability level and range from blue bump runs to double diamond black runs.
Plus, the bumps are nice and soft right now. “We have had some of the best snow conditions in the state before this big storm rolled in. Now the moguls are soft and even more fun.”
Barnes adds that the camp is on both sides of the mountain, but primarily the Mary Jane side because the moguls are more rhythmical there. “You get people with fairly high skill levels on the Mary Jane side and they make the moguls more regular. You can get in a rhythm and stay in that rhythm and the moguls are where you want them to be on a fairly regular basis.”
