Learning anything new takes time, especially when learning a new sport. The problem with a lot of January Learn to Ski and Snowboard specials (albeit well intentioned) is that they limit the lesson to just 60 minutes and often don't include much in terms of follow-up instruction without further expense. What a tease. For anyone who's ever tried to teach someone a new sport, or tried to learn one themselves, they know that the biggest part of getting a new skill dialed in is time. After the basics have been covered, it's a matter of putting in the practice hours to become good, and with something like skiing and snowboarding, practicing is half the fun.
Virginia's Massanutten Resort takes a thorough approach to teaching first timers how to ski and snowboard, by including a 4 hour session in their discounted Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month package. First time skers or snowboarders can get a 4 hour Pathway Program for just $59 - that's a savings of $20 - Mondays through Thursdays between January 2 and 31, 2013.
The Pathway Program is designed specifically for the first-time skier or snowboarder and helps participants progress through two separate one-hour coaching sessions to help them master the mountain's beginner terrain. This gives first timers a chance to apply the skills they've learned at the beginning, then meet up with the coach again to work out the kinks and refine their technique, all within their first day on snow. Package price includes lift ticket and equipment rental. Minimum age is 7 years old.
Once you've conquered the bunny hill, Massanutten's got a wide array of intermediate and advanced clinics and group lesson options to get you further up the chairlift and skier foodchain.
