Head to Snowbird this weekend and watch on as small athletes conquer big lines. The IFSA Junior Big Mountain Freeskiing and Snowboarding event will set up course in Snowbird’s Gad Valley, where natural mountain crags and steep descents become the competitive stomping grounds for fearless teens on skis and snowboards.
This next generation of super shredders is muscling their way into the lineup of today’s big mountain skiers, laying claim to the technical descents that some of the world’s biggest rippers and local all-stars – Rachel Burkes, Juliann Carr, Shannan Yates-Cochrane and the likes – have also come to master.
Spectators can catch a glimpse of these up-and-coming athletes’ fluid and technical skill near the event’s finish line in Gad Valley. Skiers and snowboarders will be competing on Jan. 19, 20 and 21 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Snowbird marks the second stop as part of the national series and a pre-qualifying event for the North American Championships in Revelstoke, B.C. in April 2013, where one skier will be crowned the (junior) king of the mountain.
Jan. 18 – Venue inspection (athletes only)
Jan. 19 – Round one, 12-14 year olds
Jan. 20 – Round one, 15-18 year olds
Jan. 21 – Finals, all age groups
