Idaho’s Schweitzer Mountain Resort, like many other ski areas nationwide, is pumping up ski and snowboard instruction with special deals for beginners in the January Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month. But instructional programs at Schweitzer go well beyond benefitting beginners in January. The resort has invested in upgrades to the learning terrain and adds in adult quick tip clinics to lodging packages.

During January, Schweitzer is running a $39 beginner package for newcomers to learn to ski or snowboard. The package includes lessons, beginner lift tickets, and rentals. The program is available for anyone age 7 through adult.

After the first lesson is completed, participants can add on two more lesson package days for $60 each. Skiers and snowboarders who complete all three lessons will receive unlimited free spring skiing from March 11 through the end of the 2012-13 season.

Schweitzer’s emphasis on producing successful beginner experiences prompted the resort to upgrade amenities for newcomers to skiing or snowboarding. The beginner lift — Musical Chairs — was retrofitted with new chairs that have a restraining bar. A change in the drive system added smoother speed changes for loading and unloading. In addition, Schweitzer redesigned the flow in the Ski and Ride Center.

In addition to Schweitzer’s January learn to ski or ride program, the resort runs a full line up of lessons for adults and children in all ability levels. But the most unique lesson is a quick one. The resort builds adult quick tip clinics into several of its lodging packages as a way to gain a bit more success on the slopes.

Skier or snowboarder intermediates can also get a one-day package to boost their skills and confidence. The $105 package includes a lesson, lift ticket, and rental gear. The price drops to $45 for those with their own lift tickets and gear.

Specialty lessons are also available. Skiers or snowboarders can get coached on learning new tricks in the terrain park for $55 per hour. Sessions are offered twice daily.
