For British Columbia skiers and snowboarders, good things have been coming in daily doses of snow. That snow has been piling up early and fast, providing powder conditions and access to some terrain earlier than usual.
Two more British Columbia ski resorts opened this weekend. Approaching its opening, Kimberley Alpine Resort had amassed about a foot more snowfall than last year at the same time.
Visitors heading to Kimberley can get a third night of lodging at 50 percent off and up to 25 percent off lift tickets. Lodging is in a studio the Trickle Creek Lodge for three nights, and two adult lift tickets for two days are included. Rates start at $233 per person, based on double occupancy. Ask about blackout dates. Call 800-258-7669 for reservations.
Panorama Mountain Village launched its 50th anniversary season also over the weekend. Conditions on the upper mountain are so powder-filled that Taynton Bowl, the Extreme Dream Zone, and Summit runs have opened.
Several lodging packages are available at Panorama, including the “All Thrills No Frills.” The package combines lift tickets and lodging in a condo or townhome starting at $109 per person per night for a three- or four-night stay. Longer stays drop the rate to $99. Access to the Panorama Springs Hot Pools is also included. Call 800-663-2929 for reservations.
In central British Columbia, Revelstoke Mountain Resort surpassed the 500-centimeter mark in snowfall for the season. Whistler Blackcomb trails just behind, having topped the 400-centimeter mark for snowfall. On Vancouver Island, Mt. Washington Alpine Resort popped open its Outback last weekend for an early opening, one of only a few times this early in the resort’s history.
By the end of the first couple weeks of the season, Fernie Alpine Resort had amassed more than 300 centimeters of snowfall, setting up the resort for strong holiday skiing. Further north, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s mid-mountain station has already recorded just a few centimeters shy of its annual snowfall.
The story in BC this winter is powder. Catch some powder fever in this video from Fernie:
