In Sun Valley, the onset of winter brings on two new festivals for celebrating the snow season and the holidays. The Powder Festival will pump up the adrenaline for skiers and snowboarders while the Winter Wonderland Festival heralds the holiday season, and Sun Valley Resort offers a lodging package for each festival.
The new Sun Valley Powder Festival, which runs Dec. 6-9, 2012, celebrates the best of the ski and snowboard season. The long weekend features an air bag jump contest, snow dance, and film festival.
The festival launches with a laser light show and music at the Cornerstone Bar and Grill, followed by Sun Valley’s first air bag jump contest. The Nordica US Air Bag Jump Contest, which is open to anyone, culminates in a slow motion video show to choose the winning jumps by crowd appeal. The K2/Scott Sports Powder Dance brings on music, a costume contest, and prizes for $30, and the Smith Optics Film Festival takes over the Ketchum Town Square for videos of powder skiing. More live music and other events take place during the weekend.
Packages are available for the Powder Festival weekend. Rates start at $109.50 per person per night based on double occupancy. That rate includes lodging, lift tickets for one day, and tickets to the Powder Dance on Dec. 7. Additional nights and lift tickets can be added to the package.
Sun Valley’s Winter Wonderland Festival combines the holiday spirit with sparkling lights and special events. The festival runs through Jan. 4 and launches with an ongoing art show that displays the works of international artists to celebrate the language of the holidays.
Special holiday festival events are scheduled throughout December. The Winter Wonderland Gala on Dec. 1 combines a scavenger hunt, wagon rides, tapas, Santa visits, and the opening of the 2012 Gingerbread Village display complete with Bald Mountain and the Snowball Express Train. A Dec. 8 open house at the Brass Ranch Shop celebrates 80 years of Bogner ski clothing. The annual tree lighting ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 15 followed on Dec. 21 with the Holiday Classical Christmas Concert.
The Winter Wonderland Festival culminates on Dec. 24 with the Nutcracker on Ice and traditional Christmas Eve torchlight parade. Other events include weekend breakfasts with Santa, sleigh rides to Trail Creek Cabin, tubing, and holiday menus at resort restaurants. The New Year’s Eve Bubbly Bash at River Run Lodge rings in 2013.
For the Winter Wonderland Festival, Sun Valley Resort has two packages with accommodations in the lodge or inn. Both packages include a hand-painted ceramic Sun Valley Christmas ornament. Lift tickets cost extra, but they can be added on to the packages.
The first package is available Dec. 1-20, 2012 for $199. It combines accommodations and a $50 gift card per room per night. The second package is available Dec. 21-Jan. 1, 2013. For two people, the $319 rate per room per night includes a $100 Gift Card, and two tickets for the Roundhouse Gondola.
