Skiing and/or snowboarding are the best actives of the winter season, in our humble opinion, but without a doubt, breaking into the sport can be daunting. Not only is it cold and requires a certain threshold of pain (while learning), but it requires a significant investment of time and money if you're destined to become a die-hard storm chaser. Bryce Resort, in Virginia, wants to see those mountain newbies make a lasting connection to the sport and to help, they've developed an affordable offering for beginners.

The First Time Package at Bryce Resort is designed for skiers and riders as young as 8 years old to test out the sport with professional instruction and on-site equipment rental, plus a pass that won't let them get in over their heads. This package includes full-day equipment rental, a one and a half hour group lesson and a carpet lift/slope ticket. After all, there's nothing wrong with baby steps when you're just learning.

If after three hours of lapping the beginner slopes a first-timer's skills are taking off, so can they, by upgrading to a full mountain lift ticket ($10 on weekdays, $20 on weekends and holidays) that will get them off and exploring the mountain.

The First Time Package offers classes at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on weekdays, plus two more classes at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Weekday packages start at $64 for Juniors, Seniors and Military (personnel and dependents); $69 for Adults (13-64). Weekend/holiday packages start at $69 for Juniors, Seniors and Military; $78 for Adults.
