Bookworms and powderhounds alike are in for a treat thanks to a partnership between Island Lake Catskiing and Oolichan Books, based out of Fernie, BC. The two recently announced the release of Bears Above the Valley, an illustrated history of the Island Lake Lodge and the Cedar Valley. The book documents the snow-sporting history of Island Lake and the Cedar Valley, located in the Lizard Range of the Canadian Rockies, through awe-inspiring photography and words by co-authors Mike McPhee, Mark Gallup and Lee-Anne Walker.
Cat skiing in the Island Lake area officially began in 1988, when the Bear Lodge was built and the first snowcat was delivered. Throughout the 1990’s famed freeskiers and snowboarders frequented Island Lake, with portions of films like Greg Stump’s “P-Tex, Lies & Duct Tape,” Warren Miller’s “Ride” and Matchstick Productions’ “Fetish” being filmed there. Island Lake Catskiing is regarded as one of the best backcountry lodging and skiing destinations in the world and Bears Above the Valley should be on any backcountry enthusiast's reading list.
