Austrian Snowfall Takes Tux Past Six Feet

However by lunchtime today (Tuesday 27th February) a further four inches has fallen, on top of six inches that were waiting for skiers on Monday morning, another foot of snow is forecast over the next week. The resort has now hit its average snow level for theis time of year. It's not all great news for Austrian areas, which have had some of the worst of Europe's "challenging" 2006/07 winter. Some of the country's most famous resorts are some of Europe's lowest both at village level and, crucially, at the tops of the mountains. These lower areas such as Kitzbuhel are continuing to battle with warmer temperatures. Here, despite another six inches of fresh snow, depths remain around 18 inches at the top of the mountain and only three or four inches at resort level. It is definitelty now a case of near normal snow cover at altitudes above 6-7,000 feet, but well below average below that height.
