Washington’s Stevens Pass Ski Area opened in 1937 with a lodge built by the CCC. While the original lodge burned down three years later, the ski area chugged along to become a popular day use area for Seattle skiers and snowboarders. This year, the ski area celebrates its 75th anniversary with a special program. Season passholders from other resorts can swap for a Stevens Pass pass.
The annual fall season pass sale winds up Oct. 31, 2012. Season passes are on sale for all age groups, weekdays only, and college students. Sale rates also apply for those renewing their season passes and newcomers who are purchasing their first passes.
Stevens Pass traditionally gives returning passholders the best deals. Newscomers pay higher rates, but this year, you can buy a season pass at the renewal rate if you had a season pass last year at any other ski resort. Of course, you must show last year’s pass to get the deal. To get in on this deal, you can only buy the pass at Stevens Pass or by phone.
So what can you get for a season pass at Stevens? A long ski season that is slated to begin Nov. 21, at least six of its 10 lifts lit for night skiing, ski runs on three sides of two mountains and an average of 450 inches of snowfall.
The resort also sunk $1 million into improvements for this winter. Stevens Pass added three new Pisten Bully 400 machines for beefing up the grooming, particularly in the terrain parks. Crews gladed and whacked back the brush to create more routes through Corona Bowl, the Aquarius area, and the trees between Wild Katz and Double Diamond runs.
Stevens Pass is also expanding its terrain parks. Two new front side parks will offer skill building features for riders to progress their freestyle skills and move on to the Top Phlight Terrain Park. The expansion will also add 40 new boxes and rails. One new feature--the Space Needle Bonk—emulates the Seattle landmark with a 10-foot-tall replica.
An October storm has already delivered snow to Stevens Pass with more snow is expected this week, a reason to act fast and buy a pass.
